Alice, Shame about Devourment's attitude, but I can't say I'm that suprised. I've always gotten a bit of a bro jock vibe from that band. Sounds like you had a great time otherwise though! Scott (harmless on vlv)

How were The Endless Blockade? I wish I had a chance to see them in the UK but that'll never happen.

Forgot to post about this show next Monday: Monday June 15th- Passive Aggressor, Fatal Erection, Iron Chic, Canadian Rifle, Daylight Robbery @ Tommy's Tavern (in Greenpoint) Also I just got a bunch of records from Youth Attack and if I get time I'll be reviewing some of them here. (Can you tell I'm trying to get the front page of VLV back to current music stuff? Awesome, right?) xo Alice Labels: music, shows

Last night I went to Lit for Precious Metal. It was Praqtiss (minus their bass player, so it was only drums and vocals and I think they were just making up the 'songs' completely which is not their normal thing to do), Animals Killing People (vegan grindcore), and Wizardry. I went to see Animals Killing People, and they were indeed awesome (though not the most animated on stage), but Wizardry was the surprise highlight. They dressed just like I do when I go larping, and the singer had the ridiculous Wizard moves down exactly. It was seriously awesome. Upcoming shows: Thurs June 11th: Trap Them, Victims @ the Charleston Saturday June 13th: Comadre, The Saddest Landscape, Train Wreck, Black Kites @ ABC No Rio Thursday June 18th: Olde Ghost, Tournament @ the Charleston Also, Moon comes out on Friday. I'm so glad I live in NYC so I get to see it! I'm hoping I can figure out how to get tickets soon. Labels: shows

I went to Death By Audio three nights in a row this weekend and saw a TON of killer bands. Friday: Hot cha cha, Rosetta, Architect, Biclops Saturday: Sex Vid, Mind Eraser, Iron Age, Failures, Drunkdriver Sunday: Boiling Over, Swallowed Up, Fatal Erection, Death First, Hinges Friday's show was not so hot but Saturday and Sunday KILLED IT. I really can't even say what bands I was most stoked to see, they were all so rad. Also I forgot to post but last weekend I saw Millions, Ottoman, Gods & Queens, The Neighbours, and Fist Fokkers at the Charleston. The last two bands were Icelandic and it turns out Bjork's son was in one of them and she was there! Crazy to see her in a snazzy dress just hanging out at the scuzzy Charleston. Millions was awesome and I was excited to see Gods and Queens but they had equipment issues so they only played a couple songs. Tonight I'm going to play a couple games of MTG and then head over to see Animals Killing People (vegan grindcore!!!). Four shows in a row. sdkfjhskdfhs. Labels: shows

Now that my brain has settled down a bit, I can talk more about MDF. I had an amazing time! I was stoked that there were a good handful of powerviolence/hardcore bands mixed in with the grind and death metal and black metal. It was great to see a mix of people and mix of music. So often fests just book 100% of the same sound or the same scene, and in my mind metal and hardcore have always belonged together, so it was great to see it. Highlights: - Bolt Thrower - Twice. First time I watched them from afar, second time I was right up front getting pummeled from all sides, but it was excellent. - Devourment - sounded SO TIGHT live. Total bummer that they called the women at the fest "pussys" and "sluts". - Napalm Death - got the entire outside crowd to yell "Nazi punx fuck off!" - never thought I would hear that at a metal fest! - BirdFlesh's glowsticks- hilarious - Rotten Sound - never heard them before, walked in during their set, was blown away - Spitter - awesome band - Absu - the only corpsepaint I saw all fest, AND constant trollvoice banter from the drummer made it totally hilarious - Mayhem - Atilla was doing some serious tibetan throat singing, it was intense! I later saw pictures of their performance in NYC on Thursday though, which involved corpsepaint, prop heads on stakes, and ATILLA SINGING WHILE STANDING INSIDE A TREE STUMP. I am so pissed he didn't do that at MDF. I understand the grind and death kids would have heckled the shit out of them but I felt like I really missed out on the majesty of Mayhem - Pig Destroyer & Cattle Decapitation - always rad, stoked to see them again - Sigh - ridiculous stage antics, just what I wanted to close out the fest There were tons of other awesome bands too, I can hardly wrap my mind around how many I saw! I also saw a kid in a death metal chicken outfit, and during Cannibal Corpse's set their weed mascot came out, that was hilarious. There were creepy matching triplet girls and sooo many great tattoos and metal vests. And I made one million new friends! Labels: metal, shows

I am too overwhelmed to type it all out right now but MDF 2009 was the most fun I have had in a very very long time. This is the only good picture I got the whole weekend, but I wasn't trying to take pictures 99% of the time because I was having too much fun. MAYHEM! I also saw 230823 terrible tattoos that I'll post on my other blog. I'll post more about all of this later when I've processed it all!!!! Labels: metal, shows, tattoos

In a funny twist of fate, I saw Bonnie Prince Billy last night. He wrote this great song "Death to everyone" which I have had in my head since I decided to go to the Deathfest, which starts tomorrow. I'm super stoked, it should be awesome. Labels: shows
